Sfär - Tealight Candle Holder in Glass and Porcelain
Sfär is a uniquely designed tealight holder composed of three elements: a two-part porcelain sphere, handcrafted in Lidköping, Sweden, and a precisely water-cut glass sheet from Emmaboda, Sweden. The glass features an inner cut-out, allowing it to act as a light guide when the tealight is lit. As the light travels through the glass, it breaks upon reaching the matte outer edge, creating a golden, glowing, and pulsating halo.
This striking effect, visible from multiple angles, is what makes Sfär truly iconic.
Sfär is available in five distinctive finishes. Two feature raw, matte glazes: Red Soil and Dark Night. One comes in natural off-white porcelain, named White Sand, with a soft matte soda treatment for protection. These surfaces create a beautiful contrast against the glossy glass. For a more reflective and captivating aesthetic, there are two specially developed high-gloss multicolor glazes: Midnight Blue and Ocean Blue.
I realized that most candle holders simply contain a flame—they don’t interact with light itself. I wanted to design something that not only holds a candle but transforms its glow in an almost imperceptible way. At the same time, I wanted the effect to feel subtle and mysterious, not immediately revealing how it works.
Throughout the design process, I explored countless sketches and concepts before arriving at the idea of splitting the sphere and placing a sheet of glass in between. The moment this idea took shape, I knew it was something special—an invisible transformation of light.
